Is there a best time for paragliding on Tenerife?

Many destinations have a clear season, Tenerife less so. The climate in the south of the island is mild all year round, and rain is rare. Turismo de Tenerife describes paragliding on the island as a unique experience, precisely because of the climatic conditions and the landscape.3 The question of the best time is therefore more a question of your personal preferences.

For paragliders, the temperature is not the primary factor, but the wind. A warm, sunny day can be too windy for flying, while a cool winter day can offer perfect conditions. That is why nobody can name a month in which every flight is guaranteed. What you can know, however, is how the weather changes over the course of the year.

The figures on this page come from the NOAA station Tenerife South, averaged over the years 1991 to 2020.1 They describe the climate in the south, where most tandem flights take place. In the north it is wetter and cloudier, and in the highlands considerably cooler. Anyone planning a flight from the Teide area should therefore think about bringing a jacket even in summer and expect the weather up there to feel different from by the pool.

Winter: mild, clear, and popular

From December to February, Tenerife is especially appealing to travelers from Central Europe. While it is winter at home, the Tenerife South station records in January an average daily high of 22 °C and an average daily low of 15 °C.1 That is pleasantly warm for a flight, without the sun being too strong.

There is a bit more rain during this time, but even that stays within limits. In December, the wettest month, the station records on average 2 days with notable rain and 32 mm of precipitation for the whole month.1 In February it is even drier, with 1 rainy day.1 On most days, the sun therefore shines.

Winter days are shorter. In mid-December, it stays light for 10.2 hours.1 This matters little for a tandem flight in the morning, but more if you plan a full holiday program with flights, beach time, and excursions. We recommend scheduling your flight early in the day during winter. That leaves the afternoon free for a walk along the promenade or a visit to one of the mountain villages, and you will not need to rush if the launch is delayed.

High pressure systems bring winds known as trade winds that meet the Canary Islands from the northeast. They prevail especially in summer.

Spring: pleasant and with long days

In spring the days get longer and the weather stays mild. In April, the Tenerife South station records an average daily high of 23.3 °C, with only 1 day of notable rain.1 In May it is 24.3 °C and on average not a single rainy day.1

These months are especially pleasant on the island. It is warm enough for the beach, but not yet hot, and in May the sun is 13.4 hours above the horizon.1 Anyone who wants to combine their flight with a long day by the sea will find good conditions here.

A note: Even in spring there can be days with haze when fine dust is in the air. Then the view from above is less clear, and photos appear flatter. That is no reason not to fly, but it is a reason not to choose the very last day of your vacation for the flight.

Summer: hot, dry, and windier

Summer on Tenerife is dry and warm. In August, the Tenerife South station records an average daily high of 28.6 °C and an average daily low of 21.2 °C.1 In June and July there is on average no measurable rainfall at all.11

In summer the trade winds play a bigger role. According to the Canary Islands government, they come from the northeast and blow mainly during this time of year.2 How strong they are at a particular launch site varies from day to day, and the pilots decide each morning whether and where to fly.

For you this means: Flights are possible even in summer, but plan in enough buffer. Book your flight early in your vacation and keep a second date free. With this site's flight, you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours beforehand. And remember sun protection, because at altitude the light is especially intense in summer.

Autumn: warm like summer, quieter in town

Autumn is an underestimated time on Tenerife. In September, the Tenerife South station still records an average daily high of 27.9 °C, in October 27 °C.11 The sea is warm, the air pleasant, and after summer the island becomes a bit quieter.

In October the first rainy days return, on average 2 days with notable rain.1 In November it is 1 day, with an average daily high of 25.1 °C.1 That is still very little, and on the vast majority of days it stays dry.

Those who fly in autumn often combine the best of summer and winter: warm air, longer days than in December, and less hustle than in high season. This is a lovely time for couples and guests without schoolchildren for a flight over the coast. The air is often clearer after summer, the light softer, and in the evening you are still outside while back home it has long since grown cool.

The Right Time of Day for Your Flight

It is not just the month that matters, but also the time of day. With this site's flight, a driver picks you up from your accommodation, and the team will tell you the pickup time after booking. The exact time is set by the team, and sometimes they shift the launch by an hour or two if the wind is not right yet.

Those who love evening light will find special offers. On the route from Teide to Puerto de la Cruz there is a sunset flight from $196. It has so far received only a few reviews, but it offers lighting that is not available at midday.

For your first flight, the morning is usually the more relaxed choice. You are well rested, the day lies ahead of you, and if the time is shifted, there is still enough time. You can then use the afternoon to tell people on the beach about your flight and look at the photos at your leisure. Some pictures only look the way the moment in the air felt on a big screen.

How to Plan Your Flight Date

The most important rule for your planning: book the flight at the beginning of your vacation. That way you have enough days for a replacement date if the wind or visibility does not cooperate. On a short trip, this is more decisive than the choice of month.

Take advantage of the flexible conditions. With this page, you can now book and pay later, and cancel for free up to 24 hours in advance. A flight in the north even allows free rescheduling. So you do not have to commit to a specific day while the weather is uncertain.

And finally: trust the pilots' decision. When they postpone a flight, they have good reasons for it. A postponed flight on a clear day is ultimately more enjoyable than a forced flight in poor wind conditions. The best day for your flight is the one when everything fits.
