Why so many flights launch in Adeje

In the southwest of Tenerife, two things come together that are ideal for paragliders: steep slopes right behind the coast and a large hotel area where many vacationers stay. Turismo de Tenerife names Adeje as the takeoff and landing area in the southwest of the island.1 If you stay here, you are at the launch site in a short time in the morning and back at the pool by noon.

For you, this means a wide selection. Several tandem flights in the south pick you up at your accommodation, take you to the launch, and bring you back after landing. The flight on this page offers 23 pickup locations, including hotels in Costa Adeje, Las Américas, and Los Cristianos. You don't need your own car, and you don't have to worry about parking on narrow mountain roads. This is especially nice for guests who travel without a rental car and otherwise spend their vacation at the beach.

Paragliding in the south of Tenerife is also so popular because the weather here is often stable. The Tenerife Sur station records an average daily maximum temperature of 27.8 °C in July and not a single rainy day.3 For the flight, it is mainly the wind that matters, but dry air and clear visibility make the view from above especially far-reaching.

Taucho and Ifonche: the launch areas over the coast

The slopes above Adeje rise steeply, and up there are the launch areas that Turismo de Tenerife names as Taucho in Adeje and Ifonche near Vilaflor.2 Both places are rural and quiet, with fields, cacti, and old stone walls. The contrast to the hotel zones down by the coast could hardly be greater.

Some offers state the height of their launch. A flight from Ifonche gives 1,000 meters, another advertises a launch from 1,100 meters above Costa Adeje. The higher the launch, the longer the flight can last, if the air allows it. Nobody can guarantee it, because wind and thermals are different every day.

On the map, you can see how close the launch areas are to the coast. From the launch site to the sea, it is only a few kilometers as the crow flies, yet in that short time you fly over slopes, gorges, roads, gardens, and finally the houses by the water. Exactly this variety makes paragliding in Adeje so appealing.

What you see from above

The first look after launch is usually forward, toward the sea. On clear days, the neighboring island of La Gomera is on the horizon, and below you the coast with its bays, harbor moles, and hotel complexes passes by. If you turn around, you see the mountains behind you, which on a good day reach as far as Teide.

Nearby is also the Barranco del Infierno, a gorge in Adeje. According to the municipality, it belongs with neighboring gorges and rocks to a protected area, the Reserva Natural Especial de Barranco del Infierno.4 Whether your flight passes within sight of the gorge depends on the pilot after assessing the wind, and the area itself is protected.

The closer you get to the coast, the more details you recognize: people on the beach, boats in the water, palm trees along the promenade. The section before landing is often the moment when guests take the most photos, because the perspective is so unusual. Feel free to leave the camera in your pocket and just look. Photos are usually taken anyway by your pilot with a camera on a stick, and the images you keep in your head are often the most beautiful: the sparkling water, the shadow of the canopy on a house roof, the stillness between two gusts of wind.

The tandem flights in the south compared

In the south, the selection of tandem flights is large, and the offers are similar in price and format. The flights in the comparison are set at 2 hours, calculated from pickup to return. Differences are in group size, languages, included photos, and of course in reviews.

The flight with pickup from Costa Adeje costs from $127 and has 4.98 points out of 829 reviews. A flight with hotel transfer in Adeje costs from $127 and has 4.96 points. An offer names Playa de la Enramada as a stop and costs from $149.

The flight on this page costs from $150, has 4.94 points out of 1,169 reviews, and takes at most 4 guests per group. Among the languages of the pilots is German, which can be a real advantage on your first flight if you want to understand every word during the briefing.

How a morning with a tandem flight from

The day usually starts at the hotel. A driver picks you up, you get in with the other guests, and it goes up the mountain via switchbacks. Along the way it gets quieter, the houses get smaller, and sooner or later you see the first colorful canopies lying on the slope.

At the launch site, your pilot explains what you need to do. You get a helmet and harness, are strapped in, and wait for the right moment when the wind is right. Then you run a few steps, the canopy lifts over you, and suddenly the ground is gone. This moment is surprisingly gentle, no jolt and no falling, rather a slow lifting off.

After the flight, you land in the area around Adeje, and the car takes you back to your accommodation.1 Don't plan the day too tightly, because sometimes a launch gets delayed if the wind isn't right yet. If you keep the afternoon free, you can stay relaxed if it takes an hour longer. A table at the beach or a late lunch on the promenade is the nicest conclusion afterward, and you have plenty to tell.

Weather in the south: dry, sunny, but not flyable every day

The climate in the south of Tenerife is a gift for vacationers. The NOAA station Tenerife Sur counts an average of no days with significant rain from May to September.33333 Even in December, the wettest month, the average is 2 rainy days.3 So the sun is almost always there.

For paragliders, it is not the rain that matters, but the wind. According to the Government of the Canary Islands, the trade winds come from the northeast and blow mainly in summer.8 How strongly they arrive at a particular slope above Adeje varies from day to day, and that is exactly what the pilots observe every morning.

A tip for your planning: book your flight for the first days of vacation. If the wind doesn't work, the date simply moves back, and you still have enough time. The flight on this page can be canceled free of charge up to 24 hours in advance.

For whom the south is the right choice

If you stay in Costa Adeje, Las Américas, or Los Cristianos, a flight in the south is the obvious choice. The distances are short, the pickup is included in the price for many offers, and you hardly lose any vacation time. For families with children from age 6 and for couples who only want to plan half a day, this works well.

If, on the other hand, you want to see the green side of the island or launch particularly high, you should look at the flights in the north and in the highlands. The landscape there is completely different, but the drive is longer. More on this can be found on the pages for Puerto de la Cruz and Teide.

For the vast majority of guests, paragliding in the south of Tenerife is the perfect first flight: uncomplicated, well organized, and with a view you won't forget quickly. If you like it, the second flight in the north is the perfect addition.
