Who can join a tandem flight

The good news first: for a tandem flight you need neither experience nor special athletic ability. You do not have to steer anything or master any technique, because your pilot takes care of that. What you need is the willingness to run a few steps strongly together, and the desire to see the island from above. Very different people manage this, from teenagers to fit seniors.

Nevertheless there are limits, and each offer states them itself. On the flight of this page, children under 6 years do not fly, nor do pregnant women, persons over 70 years, or persons over 110 kilograms. These limits are not a formality: harness and wing must fit you, and the pilot must manage takeoff and landing safely with you.

Other operators may have different limits, for example regarding age or weight. If you are close to a limit, ask directly before booking. Give your weight honestly, even if it is uncomfortable. The pilot then chooses the wing, and incorrect information can make takeoff more difficult. Nobody at the takeoff site judges you by your weight; it is solely about the equipment and technique fitting both of you.

Health and Fitness

You do not need special fitness, but there are a few things you should consider. At takeoff you run several steps downhill, sometimes on uneven ground. At landing you stand up briefly and walk forward. Anyone with knee, hip, or back problems should consider beforehand whether it suits them.

With heart or circulation problems, after surgeries, or with other illnesses, a conversation with the doctor before the holiday makes sense. The flight itself is gentle on the body, but the excitement at takeoff and the altitude can raise your pulse. A doctor can tell you whether you need to worry about that.

If you tend to feel nauseous, tell your pilot before takeoff. In the air, turns and thermals can challenge your stomach. A pilot can fly more calmly and skip turns if he knows you prefer that. A light breakfast and enough water also help you go into the air relaxed. Skip a heavy buffet and lots of coffee in the morning, then your stomach will feel comfortable even in a turn.

Do I need a license or experience?

As a tandem passenger, you need no license or experience. You fly as a passenger with a pilot who is responsible for the flight. Even for pilots, Spanish aviation law according to AESA does not require a paragliding license; depending on the region and sports association, a document may be required.1

For you as a guest this means: you do not have to worry about paperwork. What is more important is that your operator works seriously. In the Canary Islands, operators of activity tourism must have an assistance or accident insurance according to the government, regulated in Decree 67/2015.2 Feel free to ask how you are insured for your flight.

You should also check your own travel insurance. Some policies exclude flight sports or extreme sports. If you want to be completely sure, clarify this before departure and not at the takeoff site. It costs you a call and gives you a calm feeling for the day of the flight.

Tandem paragliding for the first time: what you need to know

Nothing loads until you tap Play.

What to wear and bring

The operator of this page states what you should bring: sporty clothing and closed shoes. You do not necessarily need more, because helmet and safety equipment are included in the price. Choose comfortable clothing in which you can move freely, and shoes with good grip, no sandals and no flip-flops.

At the takeoff site at altitude it can be cooler than on the beach. A light jacket or a sweater does not hurt, especially in the morning or in winter. Long pants protect your legs better at takeoff and landing than shorts. Sunglasses with a secure fit help against the bright light over the sea.

Loose objects you should secure or leave in the car. A hat blows away immediately at takeoff, a phone without a strap can slip from your hand. If you want to take photos yourself, ask your pilot whether that is allowed and how to secure your phone. On the flight of this page, GoPro photos are included in the price.

Language and briefing

A good briefing is the most important preparation. Your pilot explains to you when you should run, when you may sit down, how to sit in the air, and what happens during landing. If you understand these instructions, everything goes smoothly. If not, takeoff quickly becomes hectic.

That is why language is a real factor. On the flight of this page, Spanish, English, French, Italian, German, and Czech belong to the languages of the pilots. Other offers in the south also name German, for example the flight from Costa Adeje with pickup. In the north, the offers name English and Spanish instead.

If you feel more confident in German, say so when booking or at the latest when picked up. A team with several languages can then assign you a suitable pilot. If in doubt, ask one more time rather than guessing at the takeoff site what was meant. A pilot repeats an instruction gladly, because a guest who knows exactly what to do makes takeoff easier for both.

With children and older fellow travelers

Families often ask from what age children can join. On the flight of this page, the limit is 6 years. For children, a tandem flight is a great adventure, but not every child really wants to fly at the end. Talk calmly with your child beforehand, show them videos, and let them decide for themselves.

For older fellow travelers, the flight of this page has the limit of 70 years. Anyone under that who is fit can join without problems. Decisive are less the years than the mobility at takeoff and landing. If you are unsure, ask the operator what takeoff will look like on your day.

Who does not want to or cannot fly themselves can still be there. Companions often experience takeoff from the slope or wait at the landing site and watch the wing come down from the sky. Clarify beforehand whether companions can ride in the vehicle, because space is limited on small groups.

The final tips before your flight

Plan your flight early in your holiday so you have time for a reschedule if the wind does not cooperate. With the flights on this page you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before, and you can book now and pay later. Your holiday stays flexible.

Sleep well the night before, do not drink alcohol and have a light breakfast. Be at the pickup point on time and bring your phone so the team can reach you. If you are nervous, that is completely normal; tell your pilot so they can prepare for it.

And then: trust your pilot, keep running at take-off and enjoy the moment when the ground disappears beneath you. The requirements are simple, the experience is great. With the right preparation your tandem flight over Teneriffa becomes a special moment of your holiday.
